Functional medicine addresses the underlying causes of disease, using a systems-oriented approach and engaging both patient and practitioner in a therapeutic partnership. It is an evolution in the practice of medicine that better addresses the healthcare needs of the 21st century. By shifting the traditional disease-centered focus of medical practice to a more patient-centered approach, functional medicine addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms. Functional medicine practitioners spend time with their patients, listening to their histories and looking at the interactions among genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that can influence long-term health and complex, chronic disease. In this way, functional medicine supports the unique expression of health and vitality for each individual.

Direct Primary Care (DPC) is an innovative alternative payment model for primary care being embraced by patients, physicians, employers, payers and policymakers across the United States. The defining element of DPC is an enduring and trusting relationship between a patient and his or her primary care provider.

Most pharmacies now carry a quick test for vaginitis to see if it is Bacterial vaginosis or yeast and they carry a test to see if you have a urinary infection. We will have you do that and call us with results and we will just call in the appropriate treatment. However, if that doesn't do the trick, then we need to see you for an appropriate evaluation because there are other illnesses that can mimic those conditions.
At Benton Integrative Medicine, we fully support informed consent regarding vaccines and parental choice. Dr. Benton is very active in promoting informed consent on a national level with Physicians for Informed Consent. We feel that medical decisions for any treatment, including vaccines, should be between the physician and the patient as a legislator cannot know the medical and family history of every child. We are adamantly against mandates regarding vaccines so we really appreciate the plight of parents whose children have had vaccine reactions who cannot get a medical exemption from their doctors since most physicians fear repercussions from the medical board.
However, it’s important that you understand that the State of NC still honors religious exemtions at this time and medical exemptions can be attempted if you can provide evidence of a vaccine reaction. Therefore, if you feel your child needs a medical exemption, we are happy to review the case and do testing to determine if your child has risk factors that would warrant a medical exemption. However, we will not actually provide a medical exemption. Instead, with this information, you will be able to return to the physician/ organization that administered the vaccine when your child had the reaction to build the case and have them complete the medical exemption. If your child had a definite vaccine reaction and the doctor is unwilling to address this, then you are able to report this to the medical board for negligence. Medical exemptions are never provided without valid medical reasons.
For those wanting vaccines, we have a list of urgent care offices that offer childhood vaccines so we can direct you there. We do not have the patient volume to justify keeing vaccines in the office.
